現在のネパールの首都であるカトマンズのある盆地一帯を示すカトマンズバーレー(カトマンズ渓谷)は、周囲の山から川が流れ込み、水が豊富で耕作に適した肥沃な大地のため、古くから街として栄え、様々な宗教文化が行き交い栄えた土地だ。紀元前7Cごろには、すでに統治国家が誕生していたと考えられている。訪れたことのある者にどこか懐かしさ、タイムスリップしてしまったような感覚を与えるカトマンズの街並み。それは、何千年も前からそこを往来してきた文化、歴史、人々の気配がそう感じさせるのかもしれない。交差する街、Cross Point。西や東の文化が行き交う交差点に位置したこの町が見てきたドラマティックな時間の流れに、思わず想いを馳せてしまう、そんな風景が広がっていた。

Cross-point of East and West

The Kathmandu Valley, where Nepal’s capital now lies, is a fertile basin nourished by rivers flowing down from the surrounding mountains. Rich in water and perfect for cultivation, it has long been a thriving hub of urban life, where diverse religious and cultural currents have intermingled and flourished. It is believed that as early as the 7th century BCE, a state was already being governed here. To those who visit, the streets of Kathmandu offer a sense of nostalgia, as if stepping into a time long past. Perhaps this feeling is evoked by the lingering presence of cultures, histories, and peoples who have traversed these streets for millennia. A crossroad city, “Cross-point”. One cannot help but ponder the dramatic passage of time witnessed by this town, situated at the intersection of East and West.
